The story begins with Gemma, who, after being unceremoniously dumped by her long-term boyfriend, finds solace and a bit too much liquid courage in the company of her sister, her kooky aunt, and her best friend, Dax. In a margarita-fueled moment, they cast a spell intended to erase Gemma’s ex from her memory—a spell that thrusts Gemma into an alternate reality. Here, her life is unrecognizable, and Dax, her best friend in the entire world, has no idea who she is.
Gemma’s journey through this new world has a few silly and heartwarming moments that add up to a fairly enjoyable read. She navigates the complexities of a life where every familiar touchstone has vanished, all while grappling with the realization that her feelings for Dax run deeper than she knew. The novel explores themes of love, loss, and the irrevocable change that comes with making the hard choices.
I enjoyed the story overall despite the characters’ seeming lack of depth and a predictable plotline. This was an easy read – I finished it in a day and enjoyed the time I spent reading it! Robb’s writing style is fluid and simple, capturing the important details in easy-to-read prose.
